Austin2Boston Day 8: Yorktown, VA

July 6, 2015 by Rebecca Darling

Spread the love

Today we really dug into history! Everywhere you turn up here there is some historical site.  And we started in Yorktown, Virginia – site of the end of the Revolutionary War.

The Yorktown Victory Center had a Colonial working farm and Continental Army encampment – all with docents that explain what life was like to live in that era.  We learned how they cooked everything around a fire, played with toys from that time period, and held a 12 pound musket – harder than you think.  We also marched in a Continental Army regiment, learned how canons were shot (much more complex than you think), and signed up for the militia.

I love living history museums.  You learn so much more to see it all in person – we like getting to talk to historians and ask questions – it seems to resonate so much more with my kids.

Right down the road was the Yorktown Battlefield – a national monument – and the site of the Yorktown siege and the surrender of Earl Cornwallis to George Washington that ended the Revolutionary War.

As Jack said so well today – “This history is so cool mom.” Yep, it sure is bud.

We checked into the Doubletree Hilton in Williamsburg, our home for the next 3 days.  And just in time to watch the game – did you see that incredible win by the US Ladies?? AWESOME!

And this momma had to do laundry tonight, which made me grumpy, so I may have gotten a little honest in our vlog tonight.  However, I do realize that this trip is absolutely worth all the tiny hassles like laundry.  We have had some amazing experiences…and we are only one week in.

I loved that area in Virginia! My family spent so much time there. We even considered moving to Virginia Beach when my husband worked there more than he worked in Ohio for a three year period. I think my kids loved that area more than any other we’ve visited. But traffic during the summer is a killer! Can’t wait to see what you do next.
